Guatemala chocolate

12 Guatemala chocolates from 5 independent UK chocolatiers, from £3.20.

Guatemala is a small but characterful fine-cacao origin with deep Mesoamerican roots — part of chocolate’s ancestral homeland. Cacao grows in Alta Verapaz, Suchitepéquez and the Lachuá lowlands, much of it native Criollo-influenced Trinitario grown by indigenous and smallholder communities. The chocolate tends to be complex and layered: dried fruit, warm spice, molasses and a nutty depth, sometimes with a bright fruity lift. Close ties between makers and co-operatives give clear traceability. For UK buyers, a single-origin Guatemalan bar offers something more intricate than the everyday — a spiced, fruit-and-nut profile that rewards slow tasting — while supporting cacao’s original growers.
